The Invertebrate Kingdom

Like with the Vertebrates we can group Invertebrates, animals without backbones, into different groups depending on their key characteristics.

In the following we will look at each group, the characteristics of that group and some of its members.

Cnidrians have the following characteristics:

1. Jelly-like Bodies

Flatworm Family

Flatworms

Flatworms have no body segments and are flattened in shape.

Question: Having watched the video how would you describe how a flatworm moves?

True Worms

True worms have cylindrical (round) bodies that are segmented (divided into parts).

Molluscs

To be a mollusc you need to have a soft body, a muscular foot and many will also have a shell.

The final group is the Arthropods. This group we divided into four families:

Insects

Arachnids

Crustacea

Myriapods

Insects

Insects have 6 legs and three body parts.

Arachnids

Arachnids have 8 legs and 2 body parts.

Crustacea

Most crustacea have gills and antennae.

Myriapods

Myriapods have many segments to their body and have at least one pair of legs to each segment.
